Cruising

The Club has a very active cruising section and every year arranges a programme of 10-12 cruises, mainly at weekends.  These cruises are to the favourite places on the East Coast and sometimes beyond in which case they might be longer.  Check out the website for the Programme and look out for updates in the regular newsletters.

There are also some informal cruises that don't have an organiser in the same way that the normal organised cruises do.  They are shown in the calendar and bookable as below but members taking part are responsible for making their own berthing arrangements.

There is also a Midweek Cruising WhatsApp group that is used for putting together impromptu and informal short cruises.

Cruises are booked though the Clubs website and bookings normally open between 4-6 weeks before the event -  see the online Cruise Programme for these dates and brief details of the cruise.  If you would like to join one of the cruises please log into the Members section, have a look at the Calendar, choose the cruise you are interested in and, when the booking option is open, book the lead person and the boat onto it - a very simple process!  If any meal bookings etc are required these will be dealt with separately. You will receive an email confirming your booking and after that, and nearer the cruise date itself, the Cruise Organizer will be in direct contact with you regarding the event. As we can only reserve so many places at a marina or harbour there has to be limit set on the number of bookings.  If a cruise is oversubscribed a reserve list will be maintained.

Meeting up in the Lightship the night before a cruise is a great way to chat about where we are going, what the latest forecast is and usually the most important question, what time is everyone leaving!  There is always a lot of helpful advice for members, especially those who may be new to the area, and its a really good way to get to know fellow Club members.  It doesn't matter if you have a small or larger yacht or motorboat, all are very welcome to join in.

When we arrive at our cruise destination we usually have a meet up/gathering and swap yarns about the trip and then sometimes go out to dinner to the local yacht club or to a pub. We may instead have a BBQ or a safari supper or a visit somewhere.  If a longer cruise is organized, e.g. a Blackwater Week or to the Channel Islands, Brittany or the Netherlands then boats can dip in or out and rendezvous as they choose.

Whether you choose to cruise with other HPYC yachts or on your own the Lightship is a great place to meet up and share your stories with likeminded sailors.  Have a look at the website for reports of previous cruises.

Apart from cruising in company some cruisers like to race HPYC Risk Statement for Cruising.pdf and in the HPYC programme there are Sunday races in the Spring and Autumn, Wednesday evening races in June and interclub races throughout the Summer aimed at lightly crewed yachts with white sails.  Why not join in and fine tune your sailing skills!

The Club's Risk Statement for Cruising with HPYC can be found below, please read this before booking onto a Cruise. The Cruise Flyer template, also below, is just for Cruise Organisers to use.

Please contact me if you would like to have a chat about cruising with HPYC.  Peter Ingram      Rear Commodore (Cruising)    cruising@hpyc.com
