HPYC Lightship Update on Club Opening

Published 15:37 on 7 Feb 2022

Opening of the Lightship Club house had been initially planned for the middle of February albeit with limited opening times to reflect the very low level of use so early in the year.   However with the large scale of work on the Trinity Room project, which has turned out to be much more extensive than originally expected, the timing of opening has needed to be delayed and the plan is now to reopen on Saturday 19th March: we hope you will agree this small delay in opening is a small sacrifice to pay to bring an enhanced Lightship experience to us all.

There has been a huge level of volunteer work in the Trinity Room removing ceilings and old wiring so that the main project can commence. Finally the contractors will be able to start on Monday 7th February.  With this level of work which requires some heavy engineering including the installation of the large, COVID regs compliant ventilation system which has to be assembled on site,  it would be impractical from a safety point of view alone, with contractors working, to open any earlier.  The project though is super exciting and apart from the high tech,  smart ventilation system the Trinity room is being completely rewired,  a new distribution box is being installed in the bar to comply with modern safety standards, managing the 3-phase supply,  sophisticated, dimmable LED mood lighting is being installed and all of the panelling is being reconfigured to allow the natural light through the port holes into the room and we are repurposing the plumbing to correctly manage handling of grey water discharge.  The room will be fitted with state of art celling projector and screen for presentations.   Fire safety recommendations have been adhered to and with the new arrangements we will be able to have up to 70 people in the room.  It will bring the main room of the Club back to life after so many months of disuse during the pandemic and the plan is to host the fitting out supper in the room, as was the case in the past - and all on one night again!

The Club continues to seek a new Bar and Catering contractor and as is well known the catering industry has gone through some very difficult changes with huge staff shortages abounding,  We are optimistic that we will resolve this situation and irrespective we will put in a plan b to ensure Members have use of the Club even if we have to count on volunteers to help make this happen.  Please do refer to the latest news on the website from time to time and of course do keep a look out in the Members newsletter.
